the chosen one

wow, i just finished "harry potter and the deathly hallows." i tried to draw it out over the entire weekend (i even made sure i had enough food to last me), since it's the final book, but i couldn't help myself. agh! i won't go into details and spoil it for any of you, but i will say that i'm sad to see the epic story come to a close. j.k. rowling created such a vivid and fascinating world, and it's disappointing to think about how there will be no further installments.

i can't think of any other series, or any other book, for that matter, that has such a rabid and widespread fan base. when i was picking up my book at midnight, i was surrounded by parents, grandparents, children who probably just started reading, 20-somethings, smartass teenagers, etc., who were all fervently discussing the characters, their favorite spells, and their personals theories on the ending. it was all so incredibly nerdy, but i had to smile because who am i to judge? i was there with all of them, at a bookstore in the middle of the night.

i know that there are many people who hate the hype surrounding harry potter, and i know that the series is not the most well-written work in literature, but if you really absorb yourself in the books, you can see why they're such a phenomenon. i think that the idea of magic appeals to everyone, because people want to believe that there is more to the world than what we think we know.
