ooh-de-lally, ooh-de-lally

golly what a day! when i first became unemployed, i made a long list of things that i wanted to do in the city. of course, i still haven't done most of the stuff on that list, but yesterday i crossed off the most important one (to me), the rancho park archery course! archery was my favorite unit in P.E., so when i found out that we can do it at this park, i was determined to try it. matt and i went yesterday morning to check it out and to take the introductory safety class. it was very thorough, and the instructors spent a lot of time correcting each individual's form (i only thwacked my arm with the bowstring once). but now we can come back whenever there's open shooting and use their equipment. it's awesome that there's something like that in the middle of the city, and it's even free! i definitely want to go back.





mo and dan offered me an extra ticket to "the sound of music" sing-along at the hollywood bowl last night, which i immediately snapped up. i went to one in london with suz, and this was actually the same thing, but on a much larger scale. we still hissed at the baroness, booed at the nazis, and barked when rolf came onscreen, but there was so much more. there was a large costume parade at the beginning, and the kid who won was dressed as a giant hand holding a moon with streamers ("how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?") while the second place was for two people who dressed as the chair with the pine cone that maria sits on at dinner. on an even dorkier note, i saw some people doing the actual Solfege hand gestures during "do-re-mi." one of my favorite moments was when maria and the captain kissed for the first time, and the air exploded with the sound of hundreds of party poppers, and streamers rained down on the audience. the best was during "edelweiss," when people usually wave around fake flowers, but in this age of technology, everyone opened their cell phones so it almost looked like a huge field of fireflies.

it's easy to see why "the sound of music" sing-along has become so popular. i love how the music still gives me goosebumps, and i still know all the words to all the songs. it is such a classic. too bad they don't make movies like that anymore.
