easy action

just had a crazy busy weekend, but i actually did fun stuff, so that was new!

- a couple weeks ago, i ran into a friend that was a year below me in high school at a telecine house. i haven't seen her since i graduated, so we arranged to get together for breakfast on saturday morning to catch up. it's kind of funny, because we always did the same things in high school (choir, dance, video tech), and now we're both out here trying to be editors. it seems like we'll always be in competition :) but it was nice to talk to somebody in the business who is my age, and it was especially great to see someone from home/high school out here. she understands the environment that i grew up in, and we can laugh about how our unoffical mascot was a giant TI-83 calculator without feeling like total freaks.

- my grandpa had surgery on friday, which was worrying, but everything turned out fine and when i went to visit him on saturday, he looked much better. he was actually very agitated and wanted to go home right away, which i think is a good sign.

- a lot of parents were in town this weekend for the LMU graduation, so we had a big kentucky derby party at our apartment on saturday afternoon. actually, it wasn't OUR party, which was kind of the best part because we didn't have to deal with the headache of planning and cleaning up. mike's family throws a derby party every year, and since mike and jake's apartment isn't that well-suited for hosting (they have ONE knife in their kitchen), we invited them to use our apartment. they brought everything with them from michigan, and it was probably the most elaborate party we've ever had. there were mint juleps, barbecue sandwiches, a whole lot of sides, roses in souvenir derby glasses, and even horse decorations (my favorites were the horse figurines in front of the tv, the horse oven mitt, and the banner above the fireplace)! they also set up a betting pool for the race, and somehow mike's family and meredith ended up winning all the money. if i'd known that my horse was blind in one eye, maybe i wouldn't have made my only bet for "i'mawildandcrazyguy," but he ended up in fourth, which was better than i expected.

- saturday night, we had another late-night croquet game, which took forever because there were three teams (matt and mer's dad, mer and ross, and brent and me), but it was still fun. thanks to matt's new scoring card that he created in excel (NERD!), we were able to keep track of everyone's progress with minimal confusion. but by the end of the game, brent and i were so far behind that didn't even try to go through the wickets. we would just whack our balls over to the other side of the field so we could screw up the other players' games. it's actually much more enjoyable that way.

- sunday was LMU's graduation, so we went to see mer and all the other TFA people get their master's. unfortunately, every single graduate was called up to the stage, so what we thought would be an hour-long ceremony ended up being two and a half hours of us roasting in the sun. afterwards, we went to eat at "home," a restaurant in silver lake, and the day was pretty much shot after that since we were so exhausted from the heat and sun. but congrats to the graduates!

now i'm back at work, but it's looking like it's my last week! and it's not even a full week, since i'm leaving on wednesday to go to boulder for mv's graduation. editorial is going on hiatus next week, and we don't even know if we'll be coming back to finish the movie. if i find another job, i'll probably take it, but of course i'm looking forward to some down time. yay unemployment!
