yesterday, meredith had comp tickets to "george gershwin alone," so we went to see it even though we had no idea what it was really about. it was a one-man show, where a guy acted as george gershwin and played his songs while recounting his life. and the guy was a really good pianist, it all seemed so easy for him. the play ended with him talking about gershwin's death, which would have been a downer except for the fact that he then played all 15 minutes of "rhapsody in blue" without breaking a sweat. it was AMAZING.
and THEN, when everyone thought the play was over, he told everyone to sit down, and he took out a couple of songbooks so that we could have a sing-along! it was the cutest thing ever, with everyone in the audience joining in on "embraceable you," "s'wonderful," "the man i love," and "summertime." i love when you go to random things with no expectations, and they turn out better than you could have imagined. that show definitely made my week.
