"it's not watching tv, it's research"
considering that my initials are "TV" and that i studied RTVF at school and that i now live in LA trying to get into film/tv, it makes sense that i watch a lot of television. but now it seems that i'm not the most addicted member of my family. my dad is constantly watching golf or football whenever he has a chance, and my mom now has like ten random shows that she has to tape every week. and the other night, mv wouldn't come downstairs when i was watching tv because she didn't want to get hooked on another new show. here's my list of current faves/guilty pleasures/loyalties...
- "changing rooms" (BBCAmerica): this is "trading spaces," but british (which almost always equals better). it's shorter and crazier and scarier (i usually change the channel at the reveal because i'm afraid for the homeowners). my uncle hated it when i was constantly watching home-makeover shows in london. it's a good thing i don't get BBCAmerica in LA.
- "grey's anatomy" (ABC): this obsession kind of happened by accident. even though mv loves this show, i didn't start watching until this year. ross and meredith would often use the tv in the living room on sunday nights to watch movies, so rach would come into my room to watch "desperate housewives" and "grey's." after i found myself crying at grey's even though i had no idea of what was going on, i figured it would be a good addition to my addictions. the scheduling of this show is perfect, because if there is any time that deserves a good cry, it's lonely sunday night. it's a good show to watch hunkered down in your pajamas. plus, the soundtrack is really good.
- "the oc" (FOX): the woman who selects music for "grey's anatomy" is the same one who does the music for "the oc" (she must be so cool). i do get a lot of my favorite songs from the oc, but i might stop watching this show. it's been REALLY bad and unfunny this season. i watch it out of loyalty, but i only started watching it in its second season, so how attached could i be?
- "laguna beach" (MTV) and "america's next top model" (UPN): i got into these shows because of mv and the fact that MTV and VH1 brilliantly play marathons of them when i'm sitting around on the weekend. these are my two trashy reality shows, do not judge me. actually, my friends seem to support my addiction. occasionally mer and rach will get sucked into ANTM, and brent has every episode of laguna on his htpc. i got inappropriately pissed when he watched the second season finale without me. anyway, the fact that old episodes are replayed allows me catch up if i've missed a few weeks. that's the only way i can keep up with reality tv. unfortunately, laguna's next season looks horrible, but ANTM has hit its stride.
- "gilmore girls" (WB): even though it kind of sucked this season (so far), i have to watch this so i can talk about it with mv. plus, drew always comes over for this on tuesday nights, so it's one of the rare times when our apartment comes together. i have a love/hate relationship with this show. i find myself laughing a lot even though i hate lorelai and rory for their perfect, romance-filled, junk-food-abundant lives. but now that they've added ANOTHER annoying character (luke's daughter), this show might slip off my schedule.
- "house, m.d." (FOX): yet another show that i got hooked on thanks to brent's htpc. it's pretty formulaic (the real disease is always discovered at the 38-minute mark, in the commercial-free version), but the dialogue is awesome. even though house is abrasive, gimpy, and addicted to painkillers, i'd still do him. i love it when british people play americans (but i usually hate it when americans play british. have you seen the trailer for that new movie with piper perabo? my god.).
i think that's it. nafis recommended that i watch "lost," but i don't think i should make myself watch even more tv. it might be a bit excessive.
